Preparing an employee handbook is a complex task. There are several recommended steps to follow in preparing the handbook. These steps typically include:

  • selecting a project coordinator; establishing a policy committee;
  • determining the topics to be covered in the handbook;
  • gathering information regarding these topics;
  • deciding how these topics will be presented;
  • drafting and legal review; and
  • producing the handbook.
Following these steps helps to facilitate the development of the handbook and ensures a more satisfactory final product. Each of these steps is described in the following sections.
